Biskut Arab

My experiment with kuih raya is getting better by the day. I’m surprised they are actually not that difficult to make. Just a little patience, that’s all it takes.

So far, I’ve made 4 types of biscuits: Cornflakes, Samperit, Rock Bun and Biskut Arab/Suji. The last one was my latest invention. Why? Because MrNordin told me he likes Biskut Arab, the kind that melt in the mouth.

I was at KLCC last Friday with Madam Tai Tai and we saw this stall selling very pretty multi-colored Biskut Arab. Harga dia: RM35 for 50 pieces. Mak datuk! Mahal nya! Tapi sebab cantik punya pasal and for the love of my husband, I bought it anyway hoping that it would turn out to be nice.

Sampai rumah, after berbuka, we popped one in our mouths and believe it or not, tak berapa sedap. Terlalu banyak tepung. Rupanya cantik lah, tapi rasanya ada kurang sikit.

I was a bit upset. I honestly thought it would taste good given the price that I paid for it. So, I made another resolution, just like my Rock Run, to try baking my own Biskut Arab.

The recipe I used is this:

230g tepung gandum (goreng dulu & leave it to cool)
175g minyak sapi (cair kan & leave to cool)
175g gula halus
50g tepung suji

(source: internet)

Surprise! Surprise! They turned out to be pretty nice. “Sedap! Macam ni lah rasa dia, yang!”, exclaimed my husband.

And he was promoting it to my MIL when we visited them on Saturday night. Buat malu saja… bukannya elok sangat! My MIL took one piece (I was very nervous to know what she thought of it!) and as she munched away, she slowly gave me that approval nod and I was thrilled! Yeay!! She liked it! “Macam nilah… cuba2 …”, she said. Hee.. hee…

(but after that, she whispered to me, “Ada yang tak betul pada kuih tu tadi…”. Hmmm… memang tak pernah dapat perfect score!)

Anyway, I think dah cukup lah kuih raya I tahun ni. Maybe I’ll just make a little bit more to bring home to my parents in Ipoh.

For now, I’m quite happy to see stacks of my home-made kuih raya nicely arranged on the kitchen table. Kuih yang beli-beli tu dah tak tengok dah!

And the smiling faces of my family members as they eat away my home-baked cookies make all the trouble worthwhile…

You are right BJ. Berbaloi.....memang berbaloi! I have given away 6 bottles each of my home made biskut raya to my mum and my mum in law. They were pleased. Kat rumah tu adalah dalam 15 balang lagi to give to my grandma and some for me. My biskut arab lain sikit sebab takde tepung suji but I shall try your resepi soon sebab kueh tu favourite Dini. Hope next year we'll do much better.

Dada,

Actually, resipi biskut arab tu tak ada tepung suji, only tepung gandum. But I just added it in for that "crunchier" taste.

Banyaknya engkau buat kuih! Ada lagi 15 balang? Plus 6 bottles each for your mum & MIL! Respect!

Mrs. N,

When i was working, and yet to have interest in baking, i pun buat kuih tunjuk2 jugak...but i had one lady in the office who made nice Almond London...but every year the price was increasing by a few ringgit...then i bought from stalls which most of the kuih ended up in dustbin after one month of Raya...

now that i baked my own cookies, tak pulak rasa susah...only last night i buat 4 containers of Almond London while watching US Open tennis semi final match he he...

Selamat Hari Raya to you and family...Maaf Zahir Batin

p/s yet to do the samperit/dahlia coz i misplaced the recipe..hope to find it soon...

Zaitgha,

You want to try my recipe? Here goes:

3/4 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp vanila essence
2 cups tepung kastad
1 egg yolk
I cup tepung gandum (only if the dough is too sof, but I didn't add any).
Oven 150C, 15 mins

Method: You know the ritual lah.

Good luck!

KG,

Profiteroles tu err... rasanya tak boleh berjaya, kut. Macam susah je. Tak apa lah... I order je lah from you nanti!

So, dah berapa jenis kuih you buat?
MrsNordin said…
Mumsie,,

That's true! It's not that difficult, actually. Cuma nak dengan tak nak saja...
MrsNordin said…
Principal,

Why don't you try and make it yourself? Senang saja, tak payah guna cake mixer pun. Tapi you kena ada oven lah.

Hallo Mrs N, ni resepi suji saya. Tahun depan boleh cuba ye?

1 tin (454g) ghee
Icing sugar 2 cups
1 kg Tepung gandum, ayak
250g chopped almonds or nuts
A pinch of salt

Kacau ghee + gula icing sampai sebati. Tambah garam, kacang dan paling penghabisan, tepung sedikit demi sedikit. Uli sampai jadi doh yang lembut. Lepas tu shape into small marbles and bakar dalam oven at 160 deg.

MrsN, I have not been very lucky with my experiments in spite of a brand new oven. My first attempt to make biskut sugee turned rock hard - mungkin terlalu lama dalam oven. then the subsequent batches were okay.

last night i tried sampret, followed all instructions and sukatan - itu pun tak jadi :(

i will give it another chance - kena mandi limau kut! hehe!

MelayuinLondon,

Thank you! Thank you for the recipe. I'll surely give it a try!

Kak Teh,

It's always like that. Must try once, twice.. usually by the third time then only we'll get it right. But don't be disheartened by it. Patience, my dear... patience...

MrsN,

Wah... lama i tka buka blog you (sibuk la,h apa lagi), tetiba tengok you dah byk buat kuih raya. Macam ni tak laku lah kuih2 kat chow kit tu! Gurau je...

Buat sendiri mmg lah berbaloi, cuma kena ada masa. Dulu masa i ada maid, mmg buat sendiri, kos dia sama je dgn beli, cuma bila buat, dapat 3 kali ganda, so 1 portion for me, 1 for MIL and 1 for my maid. My maid (org kelantan) pun happy je tolong sb bila dia balik kg, meja dia penuh dgn kuih muih. Mak dia pun mula2 tu terkejut sb byk kuih!

This yr i focus on choc snowdrops i tu je.. tart and london almond i beli lah.. masa nk byr tu terasa sgt byk duit keluar as compared to buat sendiri..

OK lah.. nk gi kacau butter and sugar (manually tau, sb mixer i dah rosak)!
MrsNordin said…
Busymum,

OMG! Kacau butter and sugar manually? I tak sanggup!!!

Yes, indeed. It's more satisfying to make the cookies ourselves. Just don't be too ambitious. Dapat 2, 3 jenis, cukup lah, kan?

Selamat Hari Raya, my dear friend, and happy baking!
