A Wedding Story

My BIL has finally ended his bachelorhood days when he uttered the lafaz akad nikah to his beloved wife two weeks ago. This was followed by a wedding reception on the bride's side the very next day, and last Friday was the reception on our side. Tiring, but fun.

And that explains my long silence.

The newly weds after akad nikah

My husband was the chief coordinator for his youngest brother's wedding. I played a supporting role. Organizing a wedding of this size is no joke but with the help of many relatives and friends, I think we did pretty well.

Personally, I think weddings are over-rated. The planning took months, the money spent was exorbitant, and for what? Just for show. I've been to so many weddings before this, from the one where the Agong was the guest of honour to the one which had the whole ballroom transformed into a secret garden from the Middle East. Very extravagant indeed...

But at the end of the day, as the guests took their leave, it would be just another wedding. Perhaps, it's the bride and groom who would cherish all the pomp of their wedding day. But do they? Or is it the parents?

Long before I got married, I'd never dream of a big wedding. All I wanted was a simple nikah and right after that, I'd getaway with my new husband to our honeymoon destination. That's it. But I must be joking, right? My mother would disown me if I did that! So, I agreed to a small reception at home in Ipoh, but even then, no merenjis what-so-ever. Although it was just a small wedding, we are still happily married to this very day. So who's to complain?

Bottomline is, no matter how big or small your wedding is, you must do it according to your own means. Ukur baju dibadan sendiri, kata orang. Kalau disebabkan nak buat majlis yang besar2an kita kena berhutang sana sini, baiklah tak payah. Orang datang, dah makan pulang. Kadang2 tak sempat pun jumpa pengantin. Yang kita ni, lepas tu nak menanggung membayar hutang. Buat apa? Baiklah duit tu digunakan untuk keperluan selepas kawin.

That's my take on it lah...

But, if you had the financial means, by all means, buat lah se-grand mana yang dikehendaki. Panggil lah Permaisuri Agong sekali pun, who cares (but still, I don't believe in inviting a royalty to your wedding because it should be kept as a family event. Unless you pun memang kerabat di raja, lain lah cerita). Tapi kalau tak ada, buatlah secara sederhana sahaja. Jangan nanti, rumah dah siap, pahat pun berbunyi. Enough said.

Anyway, back to my BIL's wedding.

My dear friends, SW and her husband, had agreed to become the MC for the evening. I think, that made the event somewhat special for me. They did a very good job, very cool and composed, despite the lack of practice. Both looked resplendant in blue and I believe after this, they would receive many offers to become the MC for important events.

Usually, all weddings on MrNordin's side of the family would be MC-eed by this lady who has always held that position for as long as I can remember. But for Yem's wedding, we were determined to make a difference and that's when Shila and Jab came into the picture. I've never seen them doing an MC job before, but I had a feeling they could do the job. So when I SMS Shila while she was still on holiday in Japan and she said Yes!, I was elated.

And true to my expectation, they did a very good job indeed. Even Yem complimented them by saying, "They are cool, huh?" So there you are, Shila! Next time boleh charge! Thanks again to you and Jab. It was lovely!

Bab2 yang lain tu, biasalah...

My MIL is happy that her youngest son has finally settled down. My new SIL is now staying at my MIL's house. Hee... hee... I wish her all the best! As I hugged her and said, "Welcome to the family!", deep inside I wished she would be strong and not easily affected by what's coming.

Perhaps she won't have it so bad, but even if she did, I'm determined to help her in anyway that I could coz that's what a SIL is for, right?

Enjoy the pictures!

thanks BJ for the lovely pictures

I love that pengantin no 2 pic!
Hahaha..I like that 'rumah siap pahat berbunyi..' For me and Chepul, 'rumah' we all dah siap 4 tahun barulah the pahat stopped berbunyi. But all in all, we were happy because we all tak menyusahkan sesiapa.

Anyway, I enjoyed the wedding because I got to sit next to your mum. Banyak ceritanya! Wish I could be the pengantin tua no. 3 on the dias. Tapi tu lah tak ada pulak pasangannya. :-(
Yes by the way I agree. Weddings should be according to what the family can afford and I rasa kalau done purely to menunjuk nunjuk dah masuk bab berdosa

However I loved Yem's wedding and I dont think ppl will forget the silat silat and the joget joget very soon so in your case I would say money well spent!

Apa mak I cerita kat you? My mother memang pantang jumpa you, macam2 cerita akan terkeluar.

I'm glad you enjoyed the wedding. Yes, kalau Chepul ada, boleh jadi Pengantin Tua No. 3! Hee.. hee... next time... next time....

Shila,

You think so? Yes, I also think the joget and silat made a slight difference to Yem's wedding. The songs were equally nice too. I could see Jab enjoying the music and dances. Will pass you a copy of the CD soon.

Thanks again!

Hi UrbanWitch,

Soryy I didn't get a chance to meet you again after the McD and chance meeting at bazaar Ramadhan hari tu. I wondered about you sometimes when I passed by your aunty's house. I bet you're back in Japan already by now.

Will try and update more in the future. Hope the scar has healed. Take care!

Talking about wedding, memang banyak nak cerita. We also just had a wedding a week before yours at Merak Kayangan. Surprisingly, the pelamin looks similar. IQ was also the main coordinator and I were his assistant! We had Minangkabau theme and invited dancers from Sekolah Indonesia untuk menari tarian minang. Aziz Desa was the MC. Kalau tau, boleh request Shila and hubby.

As you said, I totally agreed 100%. Buat apa nak membazir buat wedding besar2. Bila buat dekat tempat yang mahal2, only adults are invited. When wedding are meant for families and neighbours. Bukan VIP and VVIP. Ini penat nak jaga the VVIP. Anyway, bila time kita nak bermenantu, sederhana cukuplah.

Dada,

Bila time anak I nanti, we'll just do it according to our means at that point of time. It could be small, but still meriah. What's important is her family and friends. Other people don't really matter.

But, must have kugiran and joget lambak, ok? Hee.. hee... that's for the parents and their friends!

lama betol akak tak updet, i thought blog kena block from ur place.. phew.

Memang org berhabis banyak for wedding, sewa baju je dah beribu-ribu. doorgift smpai beli kat seberang, fancy-fancy in the end smpai rumah org letak entah mana. Tu belom fotografer and video yg expensive.. end up tengok is the couple themselves. Tapi itu masing-masing lah.. the best is like you said sederhana dan meriah. paling penting all the families attended dan beramah mesra..not the vvips yg dimegah-megahkan sedara sendiri tak dilayan.....
MrsNordin said…
Sarah,

I truly agree with you. There's no point inviting all the VVIPs who don't really know your family (besides those one or two chance meetings). Diaorang bukannya kenal sangat kita pun...

If one had to block relatives from coming just to accommodate the VVIPs, I think that's unacceptable.

The door gift tu, betu. Kita ni spendlah banyak2 beli benda2 tu semua, bila sampai rumah, orang buang saja. Isn't that a waste? You can give something, but biarlah berpada pada. To me, bunga telur jugak yang best, and that's what we gave our guests that night (even then, itu pun dah beribu harganya...)

Sigh... susah betul nak kawin sekarang ni, kan?

Nice colours on your bajus!

To me I prefer weddings to be strictly family affairs, itulah masanya all family come together and rejoice the new addition kan?

And berhutang just to make it look grand? A complete no-no. I have a friend who did just that - hutang tak habis after a few years (siap ambil loan Bank Rakyat you..!), unfortunately the loan tenure lasted longer than the marriage....

Tapi kalau duit jenis makan 7 keturunan pun tak habis, then by all means lah kan...

Salam Mrs.N,

Bestnya dapat sanding sekali lagi! :-)

p/s : Mana gambo pengantin sebenarnya???... :-(
MrsNordin said…
Yatt,

By the time anak you kawin, dia orang dah tak larat berdiri lama2 jadi MC kut! Hee... hee...
MrsNordin said…
MA,

Pinjam loan Bank Rakyat is better than borrowing from adik beradik dan tak bayar balik. You know how adik beradik is always the last one to be paid back, right?

Kesian your friend.. loan tak habis bayar lagi, the marriage dah dissolve. Very sad indeed...
MrsNordin said…
Auntie Yan,

Hee.. hee.. i know some of you will wonder about that.

I tak dapat ambil gambar pengantin because sibuk kesana ke sini melayan tetamu. Nanti lah I cari, ok?

Have a nice day!

i also like pengantin no 2 tu :D

Lyana,

Masa I kawin dulu, tak merasa duduk atas pelamin yang grand macam tu. That's why I took that opportunity to take that picture.

At first, husband I tak nak. But after much coaxing and realising that "Kesian bini aku... dulu tak merasa naik pelamin macam ni", he agreed. And I was thrilled! Hee.. hee... the girls were thrilled too! Nadim yang ambil gambar tu. Si Nizzar tengah sibuk berlari kesana kemari, he refused to sit still with us. That's the story behind that picture..

Hi Zie,

Thank you!

Anon,

I hope things are ok with your MIL now. That's why they say, when you marry someone, you marry the family too. Oh well.... there are lots of stories, of course.
